Thomas Robles, a writing instructor at UTSC's Writing Centre, talks about growing up in Winnipeg, Manitoba and his early social introduction to Indigenous culture and history. This early introduction occurred primarily through his interactions with his Indigenous classmates. Robles recalls that his formal education regarding Indigenous culture and history primarily took place in the early grades and addressed Indigenous history as part of the settler history of Canada, including the negative impact of that settlement on Indigenous peoples. Robles observes that, in his professional experience, change is slow in terms of formal education for students today but there is evidence that it is happening.
