Professor Halpern is the Bissell-Heyd Chair in American Studies and a social historian with a focus on race and labour in a number of national and international contexts. Prior to joining UTSC as Dean and VP Academic in 2009, he was the Prinicipal of New College on the St. George campus and Director of the Centre for the Studies of the United States. Prof. Halpern discusses his experience as a graduate student in the late 1980s and his academic and administrative career prior to joining UTSC. He shares his perspective on the changing role of UTSC within the tri-campus structure; the shift from satellite campus to mid-size comprehensive university and the resulting innovation and growth; and the changing role of the Dean's Office in relation to curriculum and research; tri-campus relations; governance and labour relations.
